This knowledge not only enhances your adventure but ensures your safety as you explore one of the world's most remarkable natural attractions. Ready to discover what makes Mount Bromo a unique challenge? Let’s delve into its fascinating volcanic legacy!

Early Eruptions Until 2000s

Did you know that since 1804, Mount Bromo has erupted over 55 times, establishing itself as one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes? As a stratovolcano, its eruptions are primarily of the strombolian type, occasionally displaying volcanic or phreatic characteristics. Key historical eruptions occurred in 1929, 1948, 1980, 1995, and 2000, each lasting up to one month and resulting in significant ashfall that extended up to 40 kilometers.

These powerful eruptions devastated hundreds of hectares of surrounding land, illustrating the formidable nature of this iconic volcano and its capacity for explosive activity.

Eruptions from 2000 - 2011

During this period, two major eruptions had a profound impact on the lives of many people. In 2004, an eruption tragically claimed the lives of two individuals and blanketed the nearby cities of Malang and Probolinggo in ash. Then, at the end of November 2010, a series of volcanic earthquakes preceded a dramatic eruption on November 26, when Mount Bromo erupted violently, sending ash columns soaring up to 700 meters into the sky.

This heightened volcanic activity persisted until late January 2011, prompting authorities to issue warnings to local residents and tourists to avoid the caldera. Refugee camps were established as the ash fallout severely disrupted daily life. The heavy rain of volcanic ash following eruptions since December 19, 2010, further compounded the situation, raising concerns about long-term environmental and health issues for those living in the area.

Airports across East Java, including Ngurah Rai in Bali, were closed, leading to numerous flight cancellations and significant economic repercussions for the local community.

Eruptions from 2012 until present

Following a volcanic earthquake in October 2012, visual observations noted thin white emissions rising about 50 meters above the crater. As a precaution, access to the caldera floor, famously known as Mount Bromo's Sea of Sand , was restricted for visitors. In December 2015, the situation escalated when Bromo was raised to a Level 3 alert after a series of volcanic earthquakes and significant ash ejections into the atmosphere. This heightened activity resulted in further restrictions, preventing visitors from accessing Mount Bromo until the end of the year.

Since 2015, Mount Bromo's volcanic activity has fluctuated multiple times, continuing to show signs of unrest through various earthquakes and ash emissions. However, despite these episodes, its alert level has not reached Level 3 again, allowing for a cautious return to normalcy while keeping a close watch on this majestic volcano.

Is Mount Bromo Open in 2024?

In 2024, Mount Bromo  was temporarily closed to the public for the Yadnya Kasada Ceremony, an annual ritual celebrated by the Tengger tribe on the 5th day of the Kasada month in the Javanese calendar. This year, the festivities took place from June 21 to June 24, during which time visitors were unable to access the volcano.

Additionally, Mount Bromo was closed on March 11, 2024, in observance of Nyepi, the Day of Silence, a significant holy day in Hindu culture. Beyond these important ceremonies and instances of heightened volcanic activity, Mount Bromo remains open to tourists, welcoming adventurers eager to experience its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
